In a remarkable display of determination and philanthropy, 35-year-old Jake Thornton from San Diego, California, has captured the nation’s attention as he treks thousands of miles across the southwestern United States to raise awareness and funds for childhood cancer research. On July 5, 2024, Thornton made a scheduled stop in Albuquerque, New Mexico, marking the halfway point of his ambitious journey that began three months ago on the Pacific coast.
Thornton, a former software engineer, was inspired to undertake this challenging expedition after losing his young niece to leukemia in 2023.
Every step I take is for Lily and for all the children fighting this brutal disease,
Thornton shared with local reporters during his brief stay in Albuquerque.
If my journey can bring hope to even one family or contribute to finding a cure, then every blister and aching muscle will have been worth it. [1]
The walk, dubbed “Strides for Hope Day,” has already covered more than 1,500 miles, with Thornton averaging about 20 miles per day. His route has taken him through some of the most challenging terrains in the country, including the scorching deserts of Southern California and Arizona. Despite facing extreme weather conditions and physical exhaustion, Thornton’s spirits remain high, bolstered by the overwhelming support he has received from communities along his path.
Dr. Elena Rodriguez, an oncologist at the University of New Mexico Cancer Center, praised Thornton’s efforts:
What Jake is doing is truly extraordinary. Not only is he raising crucial funds for research, but he’s also shining a spotlight on the ongoing battle against childhood cancer. His journey reminds us all of the strength and resilience of the human spirit. [2]
Thornton’s walk has gained significant traction on social media, with the hashtag #StridesForHope trending nationwide. Supporters can track his progress through a dedicated app, which also allows for real-time donations. To date, the campaign has raised over $2 million for the American Childhood Cancer Organization, far exceeding Thornton’s initial goal of $500,000.
Strides for Hope Day
The impact of Thornton’s journey extends beyond fundraising. In each town he passes through, he takes time to visit local hospitals and meet with young cancer patients and their families. These encounters have become a source of mutual inspiration, with many describing Thornton’s visits as a beacon of hope during their darkest times.
Sarah Lim, whose 8-year-old son is currently undergoing treatment at the University of New Mexico Hospital, shared,
Meeting Jake and hearing his story gave us a renewed sense of purpose. It’s comforting to know that there are people out there fighting alongside us, even in ways we never imagined. [3]
As Thornton prepares to continue his journey eastward, local businesses and residents in Albuquerque have rallied to support him. The city’s mayor declared July 5th as “Strides for Hope Day,” encouraging citizens to participate in a community walk alongside Thornton as he departs the city.
Looking ahead, Thornton’s route will take him through Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas before concluding in Memphis, Tennessee, at the renowned St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The entire journey is expected to cover approximately 3,000 miles and take six months to complete.
While the physical toll of such an undertaking is evident, Thornton remains focused on his goal.
There are days when every fiber of my being wants to quit,
he admitted.
But then I think of Lily, and all the kids like her who never got the chance to chase their dreams. That’s what keeps me going, one step at a time. [1]
As Jake Thornton continues his solitary walk across America, his journey serves as a powerful reminder of the impact one person can have when driven by passion and purpose. With each mile covered, he not only raises funds for a critical cause but also inspires countless individuals to find their own ways to make a difference in the world.
