Commuters in the region are advised to plan ahead as the Southbound lanes on State Route 29 will be closed for two nights in mid-April, the state’s department of transportation announced on Tuesday.
According to the transportation department’s press release, the closures are necessary to allow for essential maintenance work on a critical section of the highway. The closures are scheduled to take place on Thursday, April 18th and Friday, April 19th, from 8 PM to 6 AM each night.
We understand that any closure on a major thoroughfare like State Route 29 can cause significant inconvenience for drivers, and we apologize for the disruption,
said the department’s spokesperson, Jamie Wilkins.
However, this work is essential to ensuring the continued safety and reliability of the highway for the thousands of commuters and commercial vehicles that rely on it every day.
Detour Routes and Alternatives
During the two-night closure, southbound drivers on State Route 29 will be directed to take a detour route using local roads. The suggested detour route will guide drivers to use Exit 11 to get off State Route 29, then take Longview Road and Oakwood Drive to reconnect with the highway at Exit 9.
We urge all drivers to follow the posted signs and to allow extra time for their commutes during these two nights,
Wilkins added.
Traffic is likely to be heavier than usual, and we want to ensure everyone’s safety as they navigate the detour.
In addition to the detour route, the transportation department is also encouraging commuters to consider alternative modes of transportation, such as public transit, carpooling, or telecommuting if possible.
We know that these closures will be an inconvenience, but we’re hoping that by providing as much advance notice as possible and offering alternative options, we can help minimize the impact on the community,
Wilkins said.
Reasons for the Closures
The two-night closure on southbound State Route 29 is necessary to allow crews to perform critical maintenance and repair work on a section of the highway. According to the transportation department, the work will focus on resurfacing the roadway, repairing any potholes or cracks, and ensuring the proper functioning of drainage systems.
State Route 29 is a vital artery for our region, carrying thousands of vehicles every day,
Wilkins explained.
It’s important that we stay on top of maintenance and repairs to keep the highway in good condition and prevent more extensive, disruptive work down the line.
The transportation department has assured motorists that the closure will be limited to the southbound lanes only, with northbound traffic remaining unaffected. This, they hope, will help mitigate the overall impact on commuters and commercial traffic.
Preparing for the Closures
The transportation department is urging all drivers who regularly use State Route 29 southbound to plan ahead and allow extra time for their commutes during the two-night closure period.
We know that these closures can be frustrating, but we’re asking for the community’s understanding and cooperation,
Wilkins said.
By planning ahead and considering alternative options, we can all work together to get through this necessary maintenance work as smoothly as possible.
The department has also promised to provide frequent updates on the progress of the work and any changes to the closure schedule through their website, social media channels, and local media outlets.
Residents and commuters are encouraged to stay informed and plan their travel accordingly to minimize the impact of the upcoming lane closures on State Route 29.
