On April 29th and 30th, 2024, the grounds of the California State Capitol in Sacramento echoed with the voices of unity and understanding. The annual Muslim Advocacy Day at the Capitol, organized by leading Muslim advocacy groups, brought together individuals from diverse backgrounds to champion religious freedom, human rights, and inclusive policies.
The event, now in its 8th year, drew a record number of attendees, with over 2,000 Muslims and allies from across the state converging on the Capitol.
Their message was clear: California’s strength lies in its diversity, and the Muslim community plays an integral role in shaping the state’s vibrant tapestry.
We gather here today to reaffirm our commitment to the values that make California a beacon of hope and progress,
said Fatima Khan, Executive Director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) California.
Our faith teaches us to uphold justice, compassion, and respect for all human beings, regardless of their background or beliefs.
The Muslim Advocacy Day activities included a series of workshops and panel discussions addressing pertinent issues facing the Muslim community, such as combating Islamophobia, promoting civic engagement, and advocating for equitable policies in areas like education, healthcare, and immigration.
One of the highlights was a powerful keynote address by Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, who emphasized the importance of standing together against hate and embracing diversity.
Our differences are what make us stronger,
she said.
By celebrating our unique cultures and beliefs, we enrich the fabric of our nation and set an example for the world.
Throughout the Muslim Advocacy Day, attendees had the opportunity to engage with elected officials, community leaders, and subject matter experts, fostering open dialogue and understanding. Participants also visited their representatives’ offices, sharing their concerns and advocating for policies that support inclusivity and protect civil liberties.
Muslim Advocacy Day at the Capitol is a powerful reminder that our voices matter, and our stories deserve to be heard,
said Asma Ali, a student activist from Los Angeles.
By participating in this event, we not only celebrate our identity but also contribute to the ongoing dialogue on creating a more equitable and just society.
The event also highlighted the significant contributions of Muslim Americans to various sectors, including technology, medicine, education, and public service. Numerous success stories were shared, showcasing the positive impact of the community on California’s economy and cultural landscape.
As the Muslim Advocacy Day drew to a close, organizers and participants alike expressed their determination to build on the momentum generated by the event, working tirelessly to promote understanding, tolerance, and equal opportunities for all Californians, regardless of faith or background.
Today, we have renewed our commitment to upholding the values that make California a shining example of diversity and inclusion,
said Imam Zaid Shakir, co-founder of Zaytuna College.
By standing together, we will continue to shape a future where every voice is heard, and every individual is treated with dignity and respect.
