Los Angeles, CA – April 16, 2024 – Commuters on the SR-60 East in Los Angeles County are facing significant delays and detours this morning due to an accident involving an overturned semi-truck near the Paramount Boulevard off-ramp.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the incident occurred around 6:30 AM, causing the closure of the eastbound off-ramp and one lane of the mainline highway.
Accident Details and Impacts
The CHP reported that a semi-truck carrying a load of construction materials overturned on the SR-60 East off-ramp to Paramount Boulevard.
The truck appears to have lost control and flipped onto its side, spilling its load onto the roadway
said Officer Sarah Williams of the CHP.
No other vehicles were involved, and the driver of the semi-truck was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.
The accident has resulted in the complete closure of the eastbound Paramount Boulevard off-ramp, as well as the blocking of the right lane on the SR-60 East mainline. This has created a backup of traffic extending several miles, with drivers experiencing delays of up to an hour.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible and to expect significant congestion in the region throughout the morning commute.
Cleanup and Repair Efforts Underway
Caltrans crews have been dispatched to the scene to begin the cleanup and repair process.
Our top priority right now is to clear the roadway of the spilled cargo and debris so we can reopen the off-ramp and lane as soon as possible
said Caltrans spokesperson, John Martinez.
The overturned semi-truck has been uprighted, and crews are working to remove the construction materials from the roadway.
Martinez added that once the debris is cleared, Caltrans engineers will need to inspect the off-ramp and mainline for any structural damage before reopening them to traffic.
We understand the impact this incident is having on commuters, and we are working as quickly and safely as we can to restore normal traffic flow in the area
he stated.
Alternate Routes and Advice for Drivers
In the meantime, the CHP is advising drivers to use alternate routes to avoid the area. Motorists heading eastbound on the SR-60 are being directed to exit at Garfield Avenue or Rosemead Boulevard and use local streets to bypass the closure.
Additionally, the CHP recommends that drivers consider taking the 10 Freeway or the 105 Freeway as alternative routes to reach their destinations.
We understand this is a significant inconvenience for many drivers, and we apologize for the disruption
said Officer Williams.
Our primary focus is on clearing the scene and restoring normal traffic flow as quickly and safely as possible
Commuters are encouraged to check local news and traffic reports before starting their journeys and to allow extra time to reach their destinations. The CHP and Caltrans will continue to provide updates on the situation throughout the day.
