In a move aimed at combating the growing issue of child exploitation, State Senator has introduced a new bill that would make soliciting a minor a felony offense.
The proposed legislation, titled the
Protect Our Children Act,
seeks to enhance the legal consequences for individuals who engage in the solicitation of minors, in a bid to deter such criminal behavior and safeguard the vulnerable youth of the state.
The Alarming Rise in Online Predation The impetus behind the senator’s proposal stems from the alarming rise in reports of online predation and the exploitation of minors. According to a recent study by the Research Institute, the number of reported cases of child solicitation and exploitation has increased by 35% over the past three years, with a significant portion of these incidents occurring through digital platforms and social media.
The safety and well-being of our children are of paramount importance,
emphasized Senator in a press conference announcing the new bill.
The current laws simply do not go far enough in deterring these abhorrent crimes. By making soliciting a minor a felony, we are sending a clear message that this behavior will not be tolerated, and there will be severe consequences for those who choose to engage in it.
Strengthening the Legal Framework Under the proposed “Protect Our Children Act,” individuals found guilty of soliciting a minor would face a minimum of five years in prison, a substantial increase from the current misdemeanor charges. Additionally, the bill would mandate the offender’s registration as a sex offender, further enhancing the accountability and monitoring of such individuals.
The exploitation of our children is a grave injustice that we must address with the full force of the law,
stated the senator.
This bill is a critical step in strengthening our legal framework and sending a strong message that we will not stand idly by as predators target the most vulnerable members of our society.
Garnering Bipartisan Support The proposed legislation has garnered widespread support from both sides of the aisle, with lawmakers from across the political spectrum recognizing the urgent need to address the growing threat of child exploitation. The bill has been co-sponsored by several state representatives, and advocacy groups have voiced their endorsement, praising the senator’s proactive approach to this pressing issue.
We applaud Senator for taking this bold step to protect our children,
said Advocacy Group Leader of the Advocacy Group.
This bill sends a clear message that we will not tolerate the exploitation of minors, and we are committed to doing everything in our power to safeguard our youth.
The proposed legislation is currently undergoing a thorough review process, with public hearings and stakeholder discussions scheduled in the coming weeks. As the bill makes its way through the legislative process, the public and lawmakers alike will closely monitor its progress, with the ultimate goal of ensuring the strongest possible legal protections for the state’s most vulnerable citizens.
