Pet lovers across California are gearing up for the state’s largest pet adoption event happening this Saturday, June 1st. The annual “Rescue Me: California Adopt-a-Pet Day” hosted by the California Department of Animal Care and Control aims to find forever homes for thousands of dogs, cats, and other companion animals.
The statewide event will be broadcast live from 10 AM to 6 PM PST on the department’s website and social media channels, allowing viewers to virtually meet adoptable pets from over 200 participating shelters and rescue organizations. Those interested in adopting can submit an online application and schedule appointments for in-person meetups.
How to Watch
The live stream can be accessed at cal-adoptpet.gov or on the department’s YouTube channel starting at 10 AM PST on Saturday. Viewers can expect heartwarming pet profiles, expert advice segments, and behind-the-scenes looks at the participating shelters.
We’re thrilled to bring this event to pet lovers across the state again this year,
said Jessica Rayburn, spokesperson for the California Animal Care department.
Seeing these wonderful animals find loving homes is incredibly rewarding, and we hope the virtual format makes the adoption process easier than ever. [1]
Adoption Process
Those interested in adopting can browse available pets on the event website and submit an online application. Approved applicants will then be able to schedule meet-and-greet appointments at their local participating shelter.
To streamline the process, the department recommends having the following ready:
- Proof of ability to care for a pet, such as proof of home ownership/rental agreement, stable income, and references.
- Pet supplies like a carrier, leash, bowls, and toys to make your new friend’s transition smoother.
- Adoption fees which typically range from $25 to $200 to cover basic veterinary care. Many shelters offer discounted rates or fee-waivers during the event.
We can’t overstate the joys of pet adoption,
said Dr. Amy Faulkner, a veterinarian partnering with the event.
Not only are you giving a deserving animal a second chance, but you’re getting a loving companion practically trained and vetted for your family. [2]
Success Stories
Last year’s virtual event was a major success, facilitating over 8,000 adoptions in a single day – a new record for the program. Countless families welcomed new four-legged members, including the Garcias who adopted a senior terrier mix named Coco.
Coco has brought us so much joy,
said Maria Garcia.
Watching her profile on the livestream, we knew she was the one. She’s slowed down our busy lives in the best way. [3]
With live Q&As, pet care tips, and of course, adorable furry friends, the “Rescue Me” event promises to be an uplifting experience for pet lovers across the Golden State. Tune in Saturday and get ready to fall in love!
